Winning the second place in a beauty contest opened for her the door to Milan. The first thing the young girl had to do was lose weight.

 Melania signed her first contract in her native Slovenia. The girl starred in a shampoo advertisement. Then came the invitation to work in Milan. Stylists had to work a lot to make her appearance closer to the ideals of beauty of the time — autosunburn, absolutely smooth legs and blow-out hair.

 Knauss moved to New York, where a transformation was to take place in her appearance. The future first lady of the US plucked her eyebrows in a thin thread.
